Modeling smallholder agricultural systems to manage Striga in the semi-arid tropics

چکیده
Across southern Africa (SA), significant maize yield losses are attributed to invasive and parasitic weeds. Abundance of Striga (Striga asiatica) has become more frequent in smallholder farms (<2 ha) the past decade. Various control practices (SCPs) have been disseminated across SA, yet often, without decision support tools inform extension officers researchers which ones most appropriate for contexts. System dynamics modeling (SDM) provides an opportunity evaluate efficacy SCPs multiple seasons different agroecosystems their associated environments. We developed a SDM long-term four popularly used maize-based cropping systems. Observations from studies outlining local soil seedbanks, emergence flowering rates farmer fields were calibrate SDM. Model simulations indicate that while combination necessary manage weed, future research should focus on developing smallholder-adapted address attachment stage weed's lifecycle (e.g., timely manure application) rather than its germination, or stages. Given devastating effects S. asiatica had food security Malawi it is imperative develop like systems models smallholders. Models do not capture underlying mechanisms driving infestations may provide with potentially misleading information, subsequently, delivery ineffective SCPs.

Available online xxxx Smallholder livestock keepers represent almost 20% of the world population and steward most of the agricultural land in the tropics. Observed and expected increases in future demand for livestock products in developing countries provide unique opportunities for improving livelihoods and linked to that, improving stewardship of the environment. This cannot be a passive proc...

Agriculture began in the eastern Mediterranean Levantine Corridor about 11000 years ago toward the end of the Younger Dryas when aridity had diminished wild food resources. During the subsequent Climatic Optimum, agricultural villages spread rapidly but subsequent climatic changes on centennial to millennial scales resulted in striking oscillations in settlement, especially in marginal areas. N...
متن کاملExpounding the Value of Grain Legumes in the Semi- and Arid Tropics
Approximately 70% of the population in the semiand arid tropics reside in rural areas and depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Crop production is primarily focused on a few starchy staple crops. While this can ensure adequate calories, it inadvertently neglects the need for dietary diversity. Consequently, food and nutritional insecurity remains prevalent in the semiand arid tropics. We ...

The contribution of own food production to the nutrition of households in two neighbouring, rural, semi-arid settlements was investigated. A survey of a 10% probability sample (n=131) of households in Sekuruwe and Ga-Molekane in the Mokgalakwena Local Municipality, Waterberg District Municipality, Limpopo Province, South Africa, conducted in 2001, provided data on household composition, income ...
